What is a Doula? Doula is Greek for women helping women. Throughout active labor and delivery, the Doula
remains at the woman's side offering personal attention and encouragement. By understanding that birth is a key life
event that a woman remembers forever, the Doula works with the mother to help ensure that childbirth will be a positive and
empowereing expereince. A Doula understands the emotional needs of a woman in laobr and the physiological process of
birth. The Doula provides various non-medical techniques to facilitate labor including relaxation and massage and is
an integral part of the care team. A Doula does not replace the woman's partner or clinical care providers, rather she
complements their efforts. Faculty Paula Miller, RN, MSN, CBE, CD(DONA) Paula is a birthing
assistant, childbirth educator, and birth doula. She has over 20 years experience as an L&D nurse, a nurse clinician,
and educator. She is currently an adjunct faculty for the University of Indianapolis associate nursing program.
She is co-founder of MOMS as well as a DONA certified birth doula and approved birth doula trainer. Julie Pichon, CD(DONA) Julie is a doula and Lamaze
trained chldbirth educator. She was a breastfeeding counselor for over 7 years. She attended her first birth in
1996 and became a DONA certified doula in 2005. Along with her partner Paula, she runs a thriving doula business, Birth
